Planned Chinese Assault on the Penghu Islands

Altered Chinese Plans

Chapter Six

Sergeant Jian Kang knew he had to move quickly. The vehicle wasn’t from a port authority or some third-party security company; the marking on the side indicated that it belonged to a coast guard unit. With the prompt arrival, the station must be close, which meant that the team could soon expect more company, and in greater numbers.

Knowing that their current position wasn’t tenable due to its confines, the sergeant moved his team past the idling vehicle and toward the entrance. With only six men, the entry gates made for a bottleneck with which they may be able to hold off a larger force for a longer period.

Unless they come over the water, Jian Kang thought, glancing at the waves shimmering under the moonlight. Then we’re truly fucked.

Under the sergeant’s direction, one of the men moved the coast guard sedan across the entrance to provide a semblance of cover. Others closed the entrance gates and secured them, making it more difficult for a responding force to gain entry. The sergeant wasn’t out to win the war himself—he only planned on securing the docks until help arrived. He hoped that would come soon, although the airfield commander’s responses hadn’t been comforting.

Jian Kang again radioed the situation, asking for assistance. This time, he was promised the moon, but the timeline was vague. The sergeant knew that the commander likely had his hands full adapting to the change in plans, but the special forces leader also knew that the docks were the lifeline for the invasion. Therefore, they should hold a higher priority for the distribution of forces.

Replacing the handset, the sergeant noted lights flickering on in several buildings along the waterfront. One of them had to be the coast guard station. He didn’t know how many personnel might be at the building, but it couldn’t be a large garrison considering it was only a fishing harbor. On the other hand, it was one of the larger, if not the largest, fishing harbors on the main island of Magong.

The concern was the other lights coming on in other buildings. That couldn’t be a coincidence and could possibly be coast guard barracks. Sergeant Jian Kang knew that the port authority had to be somewhere nearby, but doubted that they had more than two or three people who might man the office. Setting up as best as they could, the sergeant sent one man off to search the dock more closely for explosives. If the facility was wired, he didn’t want to lose yet another valuable commodity. It was the same mission they had at the main port, but on a much smaller scale.

Shouts drifted across the harbor. Soon, headlights materialized on the waterfront road, all coming from the three buildings that were now lit up. Responding forces were on their way and the sergeant kept the airfield informed of the situation. It wasn’t long until vehicles began showing up near the entrance. Beams of light shone through the gate, splaying along the concrete.
